What are Social Play Groups?
Social Play Groups target the understanding and use of social language in a small group environment through direct instruction and incidental learning. Social language contains many nuances that are taught directly during small group instruction, and are then reinforced through structured play, art activities, movement activities and snack.
What skills are covered in Social Play Groups?
General skills that are taught or supported are initiating communication; sharing + gaining attention; physical + verbal turn taking; stating and understanding emotions/feelings; asking + answering questions; using basic conversational skills; maintaining personal space; demonstrating interest in others. Group incorporates concepts from a variety of areas, including the Social Thinking curriculum.
How big are the Social Play Groups?
Groups vary in size from 4-10 children.
Who runs the Social Play Groups?
Groups are planned and facilitated by 1-2 Speech Language Pathologists with extensive training in language and pragmatics (social language). Additional assistance of another educator (e.g. speech-language pathologist, teacher, occupational therapist, graduate student specializing in communication disorders) is also present.
How frequent are the Social Play Groups?
We run groups throughout the year based on need and compatibility. Groups in the Spring and Fall are generally every other Saturday and meet for 2 hours. Groups in the Summer are a week long, and meet Monday through Friday.
What ages can participate in Social Play Groups?
We offer two types of groups: pre-school age children (age 2.5-4) and school age children (5-10). Generally, your child is observed by a Speech Language Pathologist prior to enrollment, to determine group placement and readiness to attend groups.
How are the Social Play Groups planned?
Our social skills groups are tailored to each child so that optimal learning is provided.
We gear the goals of each group to the specific needs of the children present at that time.
We use a multi-modality approach to learning with the most up to date, evidenced based approaches, available. Our motto is to always be thinking and adapting to what our client’s need.
What skills are covered in Social Play Groups?
The goal of these groups is to work on social language skills such as joint attention, initiation of verbal and non-verbal communication, sharing, pretend play, asking and answering questions, gaining and maintaining attention, and physical and verbal turn taking.
Can I use my HSA/FSA card to pay for groups? Yes, Social Play Groups are HSA/FSA eligible.
